ON THE TELEPHONE
You'd never guess The talks I have (When I am quite alone, And feeling just A trifle bored) j Upon the telephone. I call up lots Of people, and I love to hear them say: "Who's that? . . . Oh, YOU! . . . How very nice! ... n Now, what's your news to-day?' I climb upon The little chair Beside the little shelf, And there I have Such lovely fun Entirely by myself. I chat and chat For ages 'cause There's always lots to tell, And often say: "Speak louder! ... I Can't hear you very well!" I learn a heap Of secrets that I can't explain to you About the things That folks have done, And what they mean to do. And sometimes I Invite my friends To come and have some tea — Beginning: "That You, darding? . . . Yes, Of course, it's only Me!" I think I ought To tell you that I never lift the thing That makes it work, For if I did, The bell would really ring. I did that once, And "Number, please!" Came from the other end— Which frightened me So terribly That now I just pretend!
