SOCCER SEASON.

NEW PLAYERS APPEAR. PRELIMINARY GAMES. HAMILTON TEAM COMES TO AUCKLAND. I lie games staged at, lllandlord I'.nk oil Saturday a* a |ii|ie-i>j>ener fin- the start ol tire Soccer season proved most interestiug conlestn. ami the advent of several newcomers provided added interest. The, game between Met i ni-('ol lege and J*onkoiiliv resulted in a win for the former by three goals to two. In the second game Hamilton Wanderers took an easy win from Mount Albert by 4 (toals to i. I'oiiMonliy have severai newcomers wlio weii' given a tryont. in House, Quinn and the Haywood brothers, who all shaped sat islactorily, although a bit oil the light side. Hodman, another recruit, gave a good display in goal. A. Smith has retired from the game, also Chapman, and l'onsonby will miss their services this season, l'ai iiaii is also on the injured list, with a fractured wrist, and will not be available for some time. Haggett and La very were the lull-backs oil Saturday, and acquitted themselves well, but it is quite probable that Kiggans will partner Haggett when the .season proper opens, t.'. Kkman was in the centre-half position, and performed well, having as partners two of the newcomers in Haywood and House, and they were a *;ood trio. .Mullane was on the left wing with E. Kkman inside, while ( v >uinn was in the centre, McCallum being in his usual position at inside right. Quinn was in the centre, with one of the Haywood's on the right. They should make a good lirst line when they settle down, and Fai'iran will add to their strength when lie takes the field again. Metro's Promoted Juniors. Metro-College had one or two new faces in Martin, Hedley, Quigg and Lynds, all promoted juniors. They all shaped well for their tiixt game, and should do well as the season progresses. deal was at centre-half, with and McMechan as colleagues, and they gave quite a good display. Williams was quite good in goal, with Lynds and Mead as strong defenders in the full-back line. Martin. Kallimore, Brackenridge, Flyger and Hedley comprised the front line, and functioned fairly well, but should do better when they have had a game or two together. MOUNT ALBERT'S LOSS. Mount Albert Grammar met a team from the Waikato in Hamilton Wanderers at Blandford Park and a 'most interesting game ensued until the final stages, when Mount Albert lost Berriman and Horrocks about l"i minutes before time. The visitors then put on three goals in the last few minutes, to gain a four goal to one victory.

Speed, Needliam. \Vo»<ls Hnd 11 or rocks were absentees from the Crnmmar side, the two former being ill, while the two latter have retired from the game, (lavan was hack in goal, with Ha.veoek and Cherry as fnll-haeks. Ward was eentre half, with Hunting I late of Comradesl on his left and Turley, who did not play last season, on his right. Cherry Inter fame up to eentre half and save a sound display, being a rugged type of player eminently suited for the position. Haycock Performs Well. Havcoek performed well at full-back, with Ward a solid defender. Turley and Hunting were better on defence than on constructive play, but will no doubt do hotter work in this direction when they settle down, as Hunting played on the wing for some time for his old team. Herriinan and Horrocks (brother to the half-back who has retired! were doing well 011 the right when they were both injured within a few minutes of each other, and .1 epson, Kytie. and Waters (another recruit) had a hopeless task in the final stages of the game.

The Hamilton team gave a sound allround display, Webster being clever in goal, with McLean and J. Fisher a solid pair of full-backs, who broke up the Grammar forward raids in good style. Ciarkson. Caldwell and John Fisher were a solid trio in the half-back line and proved a good constructive team. The front-i-ankers were a well-balanced line, with Stewart and C. Crcbb a clever duo on the right. McCall was a vigorous spearbend. and was well supported on the left by Kobertson and K. Crabb.
