GAOL-BORN BABY.
MANY MONTHS IN PRISON. DAT! GHTER OF BRAZILIAN. Anita, a babv girl, only daughter of Louis Prestes, Brazilian revolutionary leader, was taken to Paris recently after spending the whole of ber life of fifteen months in a Berlin Xazi prison.
Her mother is a German woman who emigrated to Brazil in 1927 and married Prestes. She was deporte<i from Brazil to Germany in 19U6, and immediately imprisoned bv the Nazis.
Two months after she entered the prison her baby was born in the prison hospital. Since then the child has lived with her in her cell in the principal women's prison of Berlin. She was christened Anita Prestes, after Anita Garibaldi, the Brazilian wife of the Italian who fought to unify Italy.
The baby's release was arranged after weeks of negotiation by two Englishwomen, Mrs. Kathleen Kimber and Dr. May Miles, of London. Finally they completed the arrangements and the baby was handed over to the mother and sister of Prestes.
Prestes' mother, who is aged 61, said in Paris: "The German secret police made a detailed description and took photographs of the baby before they would let her go. They would not let me see my daugliter-in-law when the babv was handed over."
