TOBACCONIST FINED £100
MAGISTRATE'S APPRAISAL.
"A bookmaker of some standing apparently," remarked Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court to-day when he scanned the record of Douglas Hipkins, a tobacconist, aged 45, who appeared as a sequel to a police search of premises at 11, Commerj?e Street, on Saturday.
Hipkins was charged that on April S, being the occupier of the premises, he used them as a common gaming house. He was convicted and fined £100, in default six weeks' imprisonment.
Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that when a search warrant was executed on Saturday the "usual betting paraphernalia" was found, showing the place had been used as a common gaming house.
"The accused lias been before the Court previously, but not for the last three years," added Mr. McHugli. "At the time he was arrested he had £97 in his possession." Referring to H.pkins' last appearance in Court, the magistrate remarked: "I suppose you have been carrying on the business of a bookmaker ever since then, have you?" Accused: Part of the time. The magistrate then imposed the fine.
