UNUSUAL TASK.
DEEPENING OF BERTH.
BJ<; CHCISE LINER'S VISIT.
Although a special visit of any liner entails a great amount of prior preparations, an unusual task has been necessitated as a result of the impending arrival of the 42,350-ton cruise liner Empress of Britain.
Last Monday the Auckland Harbour Board's dredge Hapai attacked the sea bed on the eastern side of Princes wharf to provide an ample minimum depth of water for the vessel at the lowest tides.
This work wan reported to the board this afternoon by the superintendent and engineer, Mr. D. Holdcriicss, who Haid the Hapai was "skimming up" the, .area to ensure a minimum depth of :t,-»ft at the lowest point of a spring tide. I'p till Thursday, when lie compiled his report, 300 cubic yards had been dredged from the area.
