A NOTED EDUCATIONIST.
For half a century, from 1886 to 1935, Mr. H. J. D. Mahon was attached to the Auckland Grammar School as pupil, teacher and head, and his work for the institution through all those years won him the esteem and affection of staff, pupils and parents. His sudden passing will be deeply regretted by thousands of boys and old boys who benefited so much by his wide knowledge and his truly educative methods in dealing with his classes. For many I years he has assisted in the work of the [University as member of the Auckland College Council, oi: the New Zealand University .Senate, and later ms President of the Auckland (College Council, his work here being of the utmost value to the higher stages of education. Perhaps the most important contribution of Mr. Mahon to the Auckland Grammar School was his broadening of the curriculum, particularly in the modern forms, and making it worth while to continue those broadened studies through to the higher forms. With the same idea he introduced the subject of accountancy to the school, and also a specialised science course for the sixth form. [He attached great importance to medical inspection of boys and to the giving of timely ! advice to parents, while he also did a particularly useful work by the introduction j of a system of remedial gymnastics.
