"VERY GREAT SHOCK."
SYMPATHY OF BOARD.
Members of the Auckland Education Board, under which Mr. Mahon served as a primary school teacher, passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr. Mahon at a meeting to-dav.
It came as a very great shock to me; I" hardly able to speak of the matter," said the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, who is also immediate past president of the Auckland University College. "Mr. Mahon Mas one of my oldest friends. I knew him from boyhood, and was closely associated with him in educational matters Over manv years He was a most valued friend. Only yesterday he presided at a meeting of 'the University College Council, and there was no indication that the end was near."
Mr. Wells added that Mr. Mahon had once served under the board, whose service he had left when he went to Nelson ( oliege. All through his career Mr. Mahon had performed faithful and valuable work. Those who had passed through his hands and taken up their own work in life would receive the news of his death as a great shock.
An application from the principal of the 'i raining College to close the college to morrow afternoon, when the funeral will be Jield, was granted.
