UP THE RIVER" is the gangsters' expression denoting the destination of their fellows sent b$ the law to America s most famous gaol, Sing Sing. Built on a narrow island in the Hudson River in the town of Ossining, 30 miles from New York, the prison has been the scene of escapes, gaolbreaks and countless other melodramas. The name Sing Sing is a corruption of S'm-Sinck. the Indian tribe originally inhabiting the vicinitu.
