IMPORTS OF MACHINERY. A feature of recent Austialian trade returns is the great increase in impotts ot machinery. This increase in the quantitv of machinery brought into Australia is litiigely responsible tor the great reduction in tiie favourable trade balance, but it means a substantial addition to the weaith-produe-:ng assets ot the Commonwealth, and is 'turther evidence ot the rapid expansion ot industrial enterprises. "1 He new machinery will add t , Australian production of consumer goods, such as paper and textile-; and by displacing imports will assist the trade balance in future years.
