Race Against The Clock

BRIGHT CRICKET.

ONE-DAY MATCH. TEAM FROM WAIKATO. COUNTRY PLAYERS' FORM, j After huntinz hard for runs in the final . stage the Auckland team defeated South Auckland by rive wickets in a one-day match at Eden I'ark yesterday. The Hawke Cup holders were unable to field their best team, and they had to meet a sti<nis Auckland combination. Butting first on a fast wicket South I Auckland $£ot 242 runs, and at one stace ' they seemed likely to do much better. The batting honours went to tJeorge 0. McKenzie. whose 78 was a stylish and polished exhibition of batting. From tlio moment he went to the crease he impressed with his style and technique and ability to place h : s shots.

McKenzie is a product of the Hamilton Technical College, and, rapidly advancing I to senior status, played for several seasons with 'the Hamilton Club. He has been in Sydney for nearly the past two years, and | has played with the Waverley senior team j there. Playing against some of the best bowlers in Australia has brought him out. but he owes, as he admits himself, much to the intensive coaching system that they have there. He is 23 years of age. and is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen seen in Auckland this year. Aitken, who bats left-hand, hit with refreshing vigour, and a spirited innings was played by l.issttte. Snedden came out with the best bowling figures, but the veteran Harvard troubled the visitors a lot with his clever, slow, right-hand spin bowling. Spring and Harrison were the only other bowlers on, and the latter occasionally gathered great pace from the pitch. The Aucklanders faced their task in a

business-like way. and there was some good batting. Walters led with 74, Sale played very spiritedly ifr 50 not out. Sccvtt maintained his consistent good form with 49. and X. Ellis quickly reached 42. There was doubt whether Auckland would get the runs against the clock, but Schiiauer hit out at the right time, and the A\ aikato score was headed with a mitiute to spare. There was little variety in the visitors attack, but Aitken flighted the hall well, as also did Hunt. The Waikato fielding was keen and crisp all the way through. The South Auckland players made a good showing, and they certainly have some plavers who would advance if they got the right opportunity. SOVTH AUCKLAND.—First Innings. \V Higginson. c B.
