WOMAN PORTRAIT PAINTER WINNER OF GOLD MEDAL. "Oil! Tt was nothing—" said Mrs. C. K. Gamble in answer to n question concerning the gold medal slie won f,r portrait painting at the Grand Central Art Galleries. New York. Mrs. Gar-'.'e passed through Auckland by t'ie Monterey this morning on her way to Melbourne, where, with her In inked, she will take up her future vesitleniv. "It is not my first visit to Australia." she said. "At one time I lived in M.%bourne for a period of over seven y«r.r». so I am looking forward to meeting all 1 mv old friends attain." Portrait painting is Mrs. Gamble's chief hobby. While in America «Tie studied art under America's foreno«t portrait painters, but when questioned on their work she refused to say anything. "I could tell you some of th ir names." she volunteered, "but even if I did they probably would not conv.y anything in New Zealand. Also portrait painting is only a hobby of mine and I do not consider myself a big enough authority to talk on the subject. Al' T can say is that I am glad to be returning to Melbourne owe more. Tdo r.oc know yet whether I will continue my work there, but it is a very interesting hobby." '
