TWENTY-EIGHT MEN FINED

The raid on a gambling school on the second floor of the Queens Arcade on Friday night, when a daring leap was made by one of the "customers," who, in i-ocaping arrest crashed through a skylight and swung, pendulum fashion, (30ft above the ground until he threw himself back on to a balcony and dieappeared, had its sequel in the Police Court to-day, when the 23 men arrested were charged before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., with a breach of the Gaming Act. James Joyce, aged 43, a labourer, was charged that, being the occupier of premises known as the Queen's Club, he used them as a common gaming house. The others were each charged with being found in a common gaming house. Mr. J. lerry appeared for Joyce, who pleaded guilty.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh said comjjlaints had been made to the police about the gambling school. The club was raided under search warrant at 8.30 on Friday night, when Joyce was found to be in charge. The premises were fitted up as a billiard saloon, but were used for gaming. An electric bell was fitted, and there was a chain on the main door to prevent anyone get; ing in in a hurry. Mr. F. K. Hunt: What games were they playing there'! ' Two-up," answered the detective. "A Fair Game." On behalf of Joyce, Mr. Terry said the club was a well-conducted establishment where those of the labouring classes went to play a fair game. Many of the men found on the premises were not playing, but merely putting in time. Joyce* had never before been in trouble. Joyce was lined £20.
