HORSE AND DOG.
"CHEAPER THAN WIFE." MAGISTRATE'S OPINION. It is the opinion of Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., that it is cheaper for a man to keep a horse and a dog than a wife! This morning the magistrate had before him a young man who admitted stealing £4 10/ that he had been asked to collect by a firm. The police said the accused had spent the money he had collected on paying his debts and buying clothes. *He had never been in trouble before, and was worthy of another chance. Appearing for accused, Mr. Aekins said his client only received £2 a week as wages, and out of that he paid £1 2/6 for his board. "He has to keep and feed his horse and dog out of the balance," said counsel. "Well, that's cheaper than keeping a wife, anyway," replied Mr. Hunt. (Laughter.) The magistrate decided to give the young man another chance, and adjourned the charge against him for six months. Suppression of accused's name was also ordered.
