THE FINAL TRIALS.
RECORDS GO BY THE BOARDJ CANADIAN'S GREAT THROW. S\DNEY, January 30. Several Australian records were broken yesterday at the final competitive trials lor the Empire Games athletes. The South African, Fouche, with 49ft 9l£in, broke the record for the shot put, while Sutherland. of Canada, added 18ft 5 5-Bin to the previous best for the hammer throw of 145 ft 2 3-Sin. Mumford and Hampson, of Australia, and Haley, Canada, broke 10 seconds in the 100 yards events. JLi. CJuinn, New Zealand, wae timed at 21 !Mos. only fourtifths of a second outside the Australian record for 220 yards, lii tliis event Shore. South Africa, registered 22 l-10s, and Holmes. England. 22 3-l<*. All the runners eased up toward the finish except Quinn, who seemed to l>e striding at his top over the last 40 yards. Handlc.v, England. broke the New South Wales record for 880 yards, taking 1. ]-.>, ami reducing the record by seven-tenth of a second. The Australian record is 1 ..">.l. i J. <J. l.rf?ckie. in the hammer throw, reached 148 ft 1 in. while V. P. Hoot, covered 880 yards in 1. ">6 l-10s. Three Xew Zealand Rills participated in invitation handicaps, the fourth division of which resulted: Misses D. Lumley. scr, 1; D. Tong. 3yds, 2: D. Strachan, scr. 3. All the New were timed at 11 '/is. ( Coy, of Canada, threw the discus 146 ft 2in—a record. Courtright, Canada, threw the javelin 198 ft Tin—a New South Wales record, and Duplessis pole vaulted 13ft 4in. ' Dickinson, New South Wales, in the broad jump smashed the Australian record of ' 24ft 6V&in, and C. H. Matthews, the New j Zealander, covered four miles in 19m 375, breaking another State record. '
