ARBITRATION CLAIM.

SHIPPING OFFICERS' VIEW. OBJECTION BY UNION. Terms and condition* for permanent tallymen were the matters in dispute when representatives of the Tallymen's I'nion and their employere appeared in the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon before Mr. Justice Hunter. An award for casnaT tallymen had already been settled in Conciliation Council. The Court was asked to fix terms and conditione for permanent men. Mr. H. J. Sheppard represented the union and Mr. H. J. Bishop appeared for the employers. The right of Mr. G. Renner to make a statement &n behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Officers' Union, of which he ifl Wellington secretary, was contested by Mr. Sheppard. The Court granted Mr. i Renner permission to make a statement • in view of its recent decision that permanent tallymen should be included in the award. Clerical workere in the shipping union in the past had been allowed to undertake tallying worV, eaid Mr. Renner, and it was considered part of the work of the shipping clerk. His union felt very (strongly over the question, he said. This union was a Dominion organisation and everywhere except at Auckland permanent tally clerks were members of it. All he asked was that shipping officers at Auckland should l>e allowed to do tally work as part of their training. Mr. Sheppard explained that the Court had instructed the parties to- the award to confer last October, but no progress had been made. The union took strong exception to the. clause which the employere wished to include to the effect that nothing in thie award should apply to permanent employees who, although not substantially employed as tallymen, should do tallying work occasionally. Such a clause was open to abuse, he eaid. The only port in New Zealand that had a union of casual and permanent tally clerks vae Auckland, eaid Mr. Bishop. Decision was reserved.
