SIX TITLES!

AUCKLAND'S HOPE.

DOMINION SWIMMING.

EMPIRE GAMES SELECTION. The final trials for selection in NewZealand's swimming team at the British Empire Games, the races for nationalsenior championships at Xew Plymouth to-morrow and on Monday and Wednesday will, more than usual, be excitingly contested and will inspire the swimmers

to surpass themselves. Xew records are anticipated. The Aucklanders who will be among the competitors, and whom enthusiasts locally believe will regain the Yaldhunst Shield, were accorded a hearty farewell at the Auckland railway station last evening. Accompanying them were the members of the Auckland representative water polo team, which is expected to contribute winning points in the shield competition.

Auckland's strongest fight for the shield will be with the present holder. Otago. Each should gain several titles and placings, the number of Auckland wins being estimated at six, at the least.

Contests in which Auckland has faint hope of achieving victory are the 440 yards, 880 yards, and one mile men's freestyle, all of which will be won by L. Xewell, of Canterbury, the 220 yard's

men's breaststroke, in which the issue will be fought out by L. Smith, of Wanganui, and J. C. Davies, of Taranaki, the 100 yards ladies' freestyle, which will be principally disputed by Misses Islay Purdie (Otago) and Sylvia Gotlieb (Wellington), and the ladies' diving and 220 yards breaststroke, two events in which wins for Otago are

assured by Misses Gwen Kix and Winnie Dunn respectively.

It is not too optimistic to predict that Aucklanders will fill the first three places in the 100 yds men's free-style. In spite of the skill of P. Hanan's opponents, they have not demonstrated enough speed to justify any opinion but that he will be the winner. A very fine 110 yds swim by N. Crump ha's encouraged the belief that he will be champion, as in li>34. Those favouring him were quick, on seeing him per-

form this swim, to ra'te him faster than Hanan. But, although Hanan waiabsent from the water through ear trouble, he has been working back to form. At any rate, the conviction that he will be defeated is not soundly based. Hr was consistently e«silv the sprinter lai-t season, and since then ha* improved rather than remained at tlie same standard. The title-holder, R. J5. Frank ham, is likely to bo third, his small loss of form being sufficient to prevent him from keeping pa<-e with Hanan and Crump. However, his prospects of winning are not altogether hopeless.

In the furlong championship Hanan and Crump will be hard pressed by Xewell and another Canterbury man. D. H. Symes, who holds the title. Nevertheless. the Aucklanders have better times to their credit, and either will be first to the finishing rope. Hanan should be runner-up to Xewell in the quarter-mile, and A. Pascoe should be similarly placed in the half-mile and mile.

Stirrinjr races between P. E. Mathieson. of Auckland, and C. Cliff, of Canterbury, for the 100 yds and 400 metres backstroke titles have been denied spectators through Cliffs misfortune in having diphtheria. Having ex[>enoticed the setback of oh attack of German measles, Mathieson has had a little more than a- month's training only, tint he has steadily recovered form, and is now in no danger of defeat.

'1 lie Aucklander, F. S. Taylor, will have a tussle for third place in the 220 yds breaststroke with K. Show. Southland, and R. Geddes, Otago. the times of all three being practically equal.

Invincible will Mona. Leydon be in the 440 yds ladies' free-style. Her contest with Tslav Purdie in the furlong will be grim. In the 100 yds Violet Coulthurst. the Auckland nominee, and Kathleen Grey, the Auckland champion, who is racing as an intermediate solely os a Games trial, will have to red me their best times this season by two or three seconds to evade defeat by Misses Purdie or Gotlieb. of whom the former has the stronger prospects.

Another question -which the writer has always advocated, that of allowing a lighter material for spinnakers, was favoured by several delegates, hut was not voted on. A motion by the Wellington delegate that the content be decided in future on a points system over five races was defeated ; also the raising of the age limit to 21. CORNWELL CUP CONTEST, 1938. The following table gives the placing* in the respective races:—
