ith several deeply buckled plates some feet above the boot-topping and extending below the water line, the Huddart-Parker intercolonial passenger liner Wanganella arrived in Auckland this afternoon from Sydney showing tMfir.s n f j, cl . encounter with the Australian trawler Durrawcen. .Early on the morning of December 28. the liner was sailing from Sydney to .Melbourne with Ills passengers (including .V> from New Zealand) when at a point IS miles from Montague Island she was struck just abaft her forward funnel 011 the starboard side bv the trawler.

J. lie Vv anganella stood by the damaged trawler tor some time, and 011 recoivin"' radioed advice from the Durrawcen that she con id manage under her own power, the \\ anganella put about and returned to Sydney at 3<> knots. The voyage to Melbourne was abandoned. Xo one suffered injury in the collision.

On her return to Sydney the Wanganella was clocked (temporary repairs having been effected at sea under the supervision of the chief engineer), and it was found that she had damaged several plates and twisted four frames. She was repaired to the satisfaction of tlie survey authorities, and resumed in the service 011 her present voyage. In the meantime new plates and frame.-* are being prepared in Australia, and will be fitted when convenient.

To date there is 110 time set down for tlie repair work, and the Wanganella will probably remain oil the run until after tlie busy season when she will enter dry dock.
