BUSINESS MAN DETAINED. CHRISTCHURCH INCIDENT. <®y Telegraph.— Special to "Star.'*) WELLINGTON, this day. connection wltii the Christehurch incident last Septeml>er, when a tailojf, Mr. F. Hiekinbotham, was detained by it constable in his own shop as a suspected burglar, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, states that the matter has been thoroughly investigated and the conclusion reached that the constable acted honestly in the course of his duty. "Up to the present time," added the Commissioner, "Mr. Hiekinbotham has not yet given us his version of the incident, although he has made statements to the Press on more than one occasion. Our request has been made twice."
Mr. Cummings mentioned that the constable, who was a probationer at the time of the incident, had since been appointed to the permanent staff. The Commissioner was not prepared to discuss the matter further in view of contemplated civil action against the constable by the complainant.
