IN WINTER'S GRIP.
Severe Conditions Throughout
England.
rOG-AND-FROST HAVOC.
(Received 2 p.m.)
LONDON, December 21
The severe frost is persisting throughout England and, combined with fog, has made the road conditions the worst in memory. Yesterday was a day of skids, crashes and glassy, frozen roads.
The wintry conditions still continue throughout Britain and in northern English counties. Many roads are still icebound. Fog in the London area, however, has dispersed and the frost was less severe last night.
A miljtary lorry and a bus collided at Windsor and as a result, five Grenadier Guards and a girl, who wa* a passenger in the bus, were injured.
Five British soldiers from Dundre Fort, Donegal, Ireland, were injured when a party of 20 were trapped in a bus which had overturned in the fog. They were unable to escape until passers-by heard their groans in the darkness and released them.
The liner Queen Mary was unable to call at Plymouth and carried her passengers on to Southampton.
A lion and four lionesses in three circus cages fell into a ditch in the fog when between Leicester and Nottingham.
A lorry crashed into the cages and the bars of the lion's cage were smashed, but the lion refused to leave. In the intense cold it 'shivered until the trainer secured the cage..
Flares were lighted to warn other traffic of the animals' presence.
