Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, broadcasting to the nation, said that "no matter how the situation changes the Chinese must not surrender. "We are convinced the present situation is favourable to China," he added. "Prolonged resistance is not to be found in Nanking or the big cities, but in the villages throughout China, and in the fixed determination of the people. "The time must come when Japan's military strength will be completely exhausted, thus giving China victory." He added that since the opening of the campaign the Chinese armies had sustained 300,000 casualties. The loss of civilian life and property could not I be computed.
