PONSONBY AND RICHMOND CLUBS.

BIG COMBINED FIELDS. KEEN RACING IN HARBOUR CLASSES. Big fields were the order of the day iu the combined races of the l'onsonby Cruising Club and the Richmond Cruising Club on Saturday, no less than 23 boats of the Z class facing the starter. All events started oft the Western Reclamation, the II class (20ft) and L and N (22ft and 20ft) finishing at Xlatiatia. Waiheke, the smaller classes sailing the usual liarhour course of the l'onsonby Club.

There was a fresh breeze from the northeast. Tli is direction gave the boats in tlie cruising races a long leg down harbour on port tack, with a few short boards to starboard in the channel. The V and S

class in the harbour races started or. the wind to Sandspit and a smart run home, after making two turns to Itesolution and back to Sandspit. The 14-footers ran up harbour to Ronu buoy as their first mark, and spinnakers were smartly set as they crossed the line.

The prettiest start seen on the harbour for many a day was that made by the 23 boats in th« popular Z class. While the starting flags were up the fleet hung to h'ewurd of the line, all keeping close together and setting their spinnakers as they crossed, all but one of the number crossing within 3i's of gunfire. The last, and what also proved to be unlucky, was Tere, and before she could get her spinnaker up and drawing a squall struck her and over she went. Mr. ti. Bellve in hits motor yacht Cyreun, was quickly on the scene and towed her to the wharf.

II Class.—The order of starting in this clasn was: Starlight, Spray, Arawa, Ma re re, Corona and Nyria. Corona, Marere and Nyria were too keen and crossed before gunfire, having to return. Starlight. Spray and Corona were in the lead passing King's wharf. The finish was: Corona, 41i 20m .'!ls; Starlight, 4b :i(»u ."sis; Spray, 41i :12m :»ls; Arawa, 4b .".Sin 2s; Nyria, 41i 4:ini 245; Mjirerr. 4b 50in 44>s.

L :iikl N Class. —This class started at 2.-'lB ii.iii., the order of getting away being: Komuri, Valmarie, Isabelle, Waialap, Marie, Marika. Winifred. Valkyria and Wairere. Komuri held her lead, with Vainarie, Marie and Valkyria next, on the .lose haul down harlionr. Finish was: Valkyria, 41i 41m 2<'S; Marika, 4h 4:5 m 255: Vamarle, 41i 43m s—s; Komuri. 4h 44m Is; Marie, 41i 47m 4s; Winifred, 4h 40m 41s; Wairere, 4h 50m 40s. THE HARBOUR RACKS. V Class.—This was the first of the harbour races, starting at 2.10 p.m., the course taking tliem down to Sandspit first. From a very keen start Charmaine was tirst away, followed by Meuiutu, Limerick, Surprise, Jewel, Vaalele, Irena, Malolo, Shamrock, Hawk and Leveret. Tainahiue and I'aroro were . late. Irena gradually went into the lead, followed by Limerick. Irena led on tile run up harbour, with Vaalele and Charmaiue next. The tinish was: Irena, 4h 25m 9s; Vaalele, 4h 29m lis; Riptide. 41i 29m 13s; Charmainc, 41i 30m 355; Shamrock. 4h 30m 555; Limerick, 4h 31m ss; Hawk. 4h 31 m 14s; Arline, 4h 31m 365; Surprise. -11l 32m 52s ; Meiuutu, 4h 33m 16s ; Leveret. 4h 37m ISs.

S Class.—The order of starting in this class was: Sonoma, Falcon. Sirona, Sceptre, Annette, Marlene, Tiki and Mahana, which was over the line at the start and had to return, losing a minute. On the run up the harbour Sonoma was leading, with Mahana a good second, followed by Sceptre and Marlene. The finish was: Sonoma, 4h 36m 12s; Mahana. 41i 37m l!is; Annette. 4h 38m 48s; Sceptre, 4h 39 m 30s; Marlene. 41i 40m 355; Sirona, 4h 40m 40s; Tiki. 4h 54m 28s.

T and X Class.—Tnis race started at 3.2 p.m., rounding Rona buoy first. Vamp was tirst off, followed by Kaniona, Salome, Lena Invader, Edna D., Endeavour, Swiftsure, Sybila and Treasure. Vamp was over a minute ahead oil the tirst round, with Lena second and Invader third. The finish was: Vamp, 4h 23m ltM; Lena, 4h 25m 15s; Invader. 4h 28m 41s: Treasure. 4h .'lOin 2s; Endeavour. 4h 3<Hii 295; E<ina !>.. 4h 32m 545; Salome, 4h 32m 545; Ramona, 4h 37m 20s. Protest by Endeavour against Treasure. Invader fouled starting mark.

y class. —The starters in this race were: Tempest, Swallow, Avenger. AyesliA, Kea, Demon, Rebel, Mania. Soon after the start, when running up harbour with her spinnaker set. Avenger carried away her mast. The tinish was: Swallow. 4h 34m 16s; Tempest, 4h 34m 20s : Mania. 4h 38m 12s; Kea, 4h 41m 335; Rebel. 4h 42m 48s: Demon, 4h 43m 355. / Class.—This was the best start of the day, all but one of the 23 boats crossing the starting line in close order. Swish was first awav, followed by Nanette, Tanya, Billy Bov. I-via, Kupe, Betty and Irena. Swish made the most of her good start and led throughout, being well handled by Sam Mason (skipper) and Graham Reed. SANDERS CUP TRIALS.

CONTESTS IN SOUTH ISLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. The third Sanders Cup trial, sailed on Lyttelton Harbour yesterday afternoon steady drizzle, was won by Elfin (" - man)' bv five seconds from Manihi (U. Brassell). Huia (R. Hendry) was third, ten seconds after Manihi. There was a moderate north-east breeze and a moderate swell. A Dunedin message states that, b£ winning the fifth trial race iu convincing manner, Eileen qualified to represent Utago in the Sanders Cup contest at Dunedin early next year. With three wins, a second and a third to her credit, she left no dount of her superiority over other boats engaged. and is the logical choK-e for representative honours.
