The invaders are suspected of having established island bases as jump:ng-off points for an attack upon Canton, which is only 80 miles inland from the British city of Hongkong.
The inability of the Japanese to check the flow of munitions through Canton lends strength to Chinese rumours that the city is endangered.
For weeks past the railway running from Kowloon, opposite Hongkong, to Canton, 80 miles away, has been bombed almost daily.
