vr 'J" venture of bringing a party of North Auckland backblocks correspondent school children to the city for a Christmas treat was described by Mr. j* Abbott, editor of the children's department of the "Auckland Star" at the final meeting for the year of the Ever-ready" committee of the Victoria League.- Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane presided. In explaining what had been done last Mr. Abbott Bftid that many of the children had never seen an ocean liner, nor had some of them ever travelled in a train. He instanced the case of one little girl who had not seen another girl, other than her sister, for two years' "It was almost pathetic," he said, "to see how the children enjoyed themselves." A gift of £0, the amount sufficient to cover the expenses of one child, was made to the fund by the Victoria League. The business of the meeting Included arrangements for the Christmas party at Knox Home and for assistance in arranging a party for old people at the Dock Street Mission. Subscriptions were made to the Red Cross Society for the Chinese relief fund. In appreciation of her work for the committee during the year Mrs. L. S. Rickerby presented Mrs. Macfarlane with a bouquet of carnations. A vote of thanks was proposed to Mrs. Rickerby and Miss E. Keesing by Mrs. Macfarlane, who also thanked the committee members for their loyal support. Songs were given by Mrs. F. H. Hobday and Miss Ela Hutchison, and pianoforte solos by Mrs. Maxwell Grey. Mrs. Grey was the accompanist. The sewing committee held their final meeting of the year earlier in the week, 'Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane presiding. She said that about 800 garments had been made and distributed to country families. Mrs. R. Charlton, an active committee member, who will shortly leave on an extended visit to Australia, was farewelled by members. On behalf of the committee and the executive, Mrs. Macfarlane presented Mrs. Charlton with a crocodile, handbag, and Mrs. F. Stubbs presented her with a bouquet of tarnations. As a farewell gift Mrs. Charlton presented the committee with an electric iron.
