ALLMER'S GREAT RIDE

Thrilling contests pleased the spectators at the Western Springs Stadium on Saturday afternoon and evening when the first of the Dominion trials to select representatives for the British Empire Gaines was held under -ideal conditions. Highlights of the meeting were the fine performance of R. Allmer, of Wellington, who broke the previous record for 1000 metres time trial by 2 2-os, his time being 1.14; the outstanding brilliance of Roy Taylor, of Papatoetoe, who beat the Olympic representative Giles, of Canterbury, convincingly in the sprint finals, and the remarkable success of Auckland riders in the ten mile paced race in taking the first three places after a gruelling contest. Patrick, last year's champion/ was the winner, while M. P. Byrnes, who rode with remarkable judgment and determination, was secon'd. H. R. Baldwin received a great ovation fur his fine performance behind tandem pace in the five miles junior invitation scratch race.

Pacers on singles mnde it fast going from the start, but there was no special incident until nearly half the distance had been covered, when Hughes shot from the back and got a substantial break. Unluckily for him the pacers failed to connect and after holding his break for the best part of a lap the field caught up. A few rounds later a similar effort by Patrick was unsuccessful for the same reason. The pace was a cracker, and after threequarters of the distance had been covered only Hughes, Byrnes, Patrick. Roe, Ulmer, Giles. Murray, Roe and Thompson were it «, Wnpn the pacers came off for the final lap Hughes led from Bvrnes and Patrick.
