SINGAPORE BASE.
Ready for Active Service If Required. BRITISH DEFENCE WORKS. LONDON, November 28. "The Observer" says the Singapore graving dock at the naval base will be completed on November 30. after which it will become a fully equipped part of the British defence works in the Far East. The flouting dock—the world's third biggest—which is moored off the naval base, has deteriorated in the humid climate, and therefore the graving dock will be all the more valuable. The graving dock is 1000 ft long and 130 ft wide, and can accommodate two battleships. The naval base is not finished because the shore quarters of the crews of warships are not built and other works are contemplated, but the base is ready for active service if lie (led.
Oil fuel to the extent of 1,250,000 toiiH is stored. This is sufficient !or six iinnitlih* supply to the China station. The totnl cost of the base is £*i),ii( xi.ooo.
