WELLINGTON, Saturday. Expenditure of £328,000 is involved in a new irrigation scheme which the Government proposese to start in the Maylield-Hinds area, South Canterbury. The scheme, according to an announcement by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, will supply water for 54,000 acres.

"The area of land covered by the scheme is 108,000 acres, and it is a portion of 460,000 acres of land which will be served by the Rangitata diversion race authorised about a year ago, and which will be the source of supply for five large projected schemes in the Ashburton County."
