MAYOR'S NEW CAR.
| WELLINGTON PURCHASE. READER ASKS QUESTION. (Hy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) C'HRISTCHURCH, this day. The reason why the new motor ear for tlie .Mayor of Cliristchurch was not purchased at a Christchurch garage is sought by "Curious" in a letter to the " Star-Sun." The writer explains that the car is of a well-known British make, and that the cost was about £1100. There are no agents in Cliristchurch for this make of vehicle, and "Curious" asks why local ratepayers were not supported when the purchase was made. The chairman of the finance committee of the City Council, Mr. E. H. Andrews, said that the Mayor's new car was regarded as being most likely to give the council the greatest value for the money expended. A Wellington firm secured the order in competition with Cliristchurch garages, and the purchase was unanimously supported by the council. "It i* interesting to note," said Mr. Andrews, "that this was the first occasion for some time that the council had placed an order for a motor vehicle outside Cliristchurch. "During the present year," he added, "at least a dozen vehicles have been purchased in Cliristchurch."
