SANK IN DEEP HOLE. .
(From Our Correspondent.)
PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday.
A drowning accident occurred in the Pohangina River yesterday afternoon, the victim being Joan Mary Tunnicliffe, aged 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Tunnicliffe, of Ashuret. The girl had been swimming with two companions, who were on' one side of the river, and unable to help, when she sank in a deep hole on the other.
The girl had swum across the river, a distance of almost a chain, quite easily. Shortly after, however, several small boy« on the same side of the river noticed her in the-hole near the bank and saw that she was in difficulties. One of them held out a stick for her assistance, but she was unable to take hold of it.
The boys then ran along the bank to where some young men were sunbathing. The latter hurried to the spot, but could cee no trace of the victim. One of them, Glen Thome, then dived to the bottom and brought the body to the surface.
