"A TRAGEDY."
PAYMENT TO EX-MEMBERS.
COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCES
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday.
Annuities and compassionate allowances provided for former members of Parliament or their widows were the subject of comment in the House of Representatives to-day when the vote for the Pensions Department was under consideration.
Mr. W. A. Bodkin (National, Central (Otago) said it was a tragedy that men who had given distinguished service to the country were not placed in a better position in the concluding period of their lives. Instead of compassionate allowances, some scheme of superannuation should be introduced, and he hoped that this would be borne in mind by the Government when bringing down its superannuation scheme next year.
Mr. W. P. Endean (National, Parnell) said a scheme for the payment of exmembers had been prepared in Great Britain. New Zealand could perhaps find a lead there.
The Minister, Mr. Parry, said that much consideration had been given to special annuities during the recess, and a report had been prepared for submission to the Government.
