WEEK-END PRICES IN SHOPS. FIRST SUMMER FRUIT. STRAWBERRIES AND TOMATOES. The first of the summer fruit—strawberries and tomatoes —are now ripening in larger quantities, and this week prices of both have gone down. Most imported fruit, including pineapples and grapes, are dearer, while bananas are still high. The shortage of lettuce bas been alleviated, and increasing supplies of new potatoes have bi ought them down to 3d a lb. The reduction in mutton prices announced last week has come into effect and the new rates are as below. Current prices in city shops are as follows:— Fruit. Apples: Californian Mackintosh, red, 2d each; Taema, 2d each; Sturmere, 5d Fer lb; Delicious, 4d and 5d per lb; ears: Cooking, 4d per lb; Winter Cole, 6d. Local grapefruit: 9d to 1/6 dozen; Jamaican, 3d to 4d each. Oranges: Australian Valencias, 2/ to 2/fi dozen. Passion fruit: 2/ to 3/ per dozen. Lemons: 6d to 1/. Bananas: 4d and 6d per lb. Tomatoes: Island, 1/6 Per lb; hothouse, 2/ per lb. Coconuts: 4d to fid each. Pineapples: Queensland, 1/9 to 2/; Island, 1/ each. Tree tomatoes: 1/ per lb. Mushrooms: Cultivated, 4/ per lb.
