ENJOYABLE FUNCTION.

CARDS AND DANCING,

Blue and white streamers ami replicas of the police badge were used in profusion at the Arts Hall last evening, when the Auckland police social entertainment committee held one of their monthly social gatherings. Sergeant W. J. K. Brown, assisted by Mrs. H. Murch, Miss Zita Murch anil the Police Orchestra, supplied old-time and new numbers. Sergeant W. Grainger was an excellent master of ceremonies. On arrival, the guests were received by the hostesses, Mrs. C. M. Francis, who wore a gown of silver grey and white checked silk organza and long maroon velvet wrap; Mrs. F. Fuller wore a peacock green shot satin and ring velvet coatee. Among those present were: Mrs. S. Till, Mrs. T. Grinter, Mrs. L. .T. Hitching*, Mrs. F. Cogle, Mrs. E. Dave, Mrs. E. L. Walton, Mrs. L. ASPARAGUS.

WAYS OF SERVING

A correspondent writes asking for recipes containing asparagus, and information on tlie correct way to serve and eat it. Wash and lightly scrape each stick, tie into bundles and plunge into boiling, salted water and cook for at least half an liour. They can lie served either hot or cold. Small tongs can l>e bought from many jewellers' stores, but asparagus is more often eaten by holding in the fingers and dipping each piece in the melted butter or sauce that has been poured over it.

Hot Asparagus. Boil scraped asparagus until tender; if young, about half an hour or more. Place on dry slices of toast and pour over hot melted butter. Asparagus Goldenrod. Ingredients: 2Mb asparagus. 2 ctipfuls medium white sauce, well seasoned, 0 slices buttered toast. 3 hard-boiled eggs.

Boil asparagus until tender. Drain, arrange on toast anil cover with white sauce (which has been made with a generous supply of butter), and chop into dice the whites of the eggs. Press the yolks through coarse sieve anil sprinkle over entire surface. Serve immediately. Serves six. Asparagus and Tomatoes. Ingredients: Firm, sound tomatoes, asparagus, hard-boiled eggs, mayonnaise dressing.

Method: Cut a hole in the end of the tomatoes and til] the cavity with thick mayonnaise dressing. Stick three or four asparagus tips (cooked or canned) into the dressing, pushing well down into the tomatoes so that they will stay in. Send to the table set on lettuce leaves and hard-boiled eggs cut in halves.

Asparagus Tip Salad. Ingredients: 3 dessertspoonfuls of gelatine. hunch of cooked asparagus tips, the heart of celery. 1 lemon, water, mayonnaise dressing, lettuce.

Method: Take a pint of the water the asparagus has been rooked in. Add salt, pepper. lemon juice and eelerv cut in small pieces. Brill™ to boiling point. Dissolve gelatine in one small cupful of hot water. ad<l to liquid. Line a mould with the tip of the asparagus. Cut up tlie remainder, mix with the celery liquid and pour into mould. When set. serve with lettuce and mayonnaise dressing.

OTAHUHU KINDERGARTEN

PAST DIRECTOR ENTERTAINED

A pleasant functon was held recently at the Otahuhu Free Kindergarten, when Mrs. Rae, of Singapore, renewed her acquaintance with "old" parents and friends.

Mrs. Rae was before her marriage Miss Flora Robertson, the original director of the kindergarten, pnd she was welcomed by the present director, Miss Lane. Morning tea was served by the Mothers' Club, and a bouquet of sweet peas and maidenhair fern was presented to the Sliest of honour by one of the first pupils, Megan Pilcher.

WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Turangaarere.—Mrs. Redman presided over a small attendance of members at Turangaarere Women's Institute's October meeting, when a good deal of business was disctiesed. It was decided, as go many members are al>sent. not to begin the first aid classes until the Xew Year. Aire. Anderton kindly offered to donate a rake to help the sick fund, and this offer was gratefully accepted. As Mrs. Kartell is in hospital, Mrs. Newton will take her place as delegate to the council meeting. A demonstration of wood fibre flowers was given by Miss Bflrtell. The winner of the premier flower competition was Mrs. Canton.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Australian Club was held at George Court's tearooms yesterday, Mrs. Gustave Pezaro presiding.
