YOUNG ARTISTS.
EXHIBITION BY GROUP.
HEALTHY CREATIVE TRENDS
An exhibition well worthy of a visit is at present to be seen iii the rooms of the Auckland Society of Arts. It has been arranged by the Rutland Art Group, which comprises ex-students of the Elam School of Art, and it consists of oils, water colours, drawings and etchings by a number of the citv's young artists.
The work shows generally a sympathetic understanding of the various moods of nature and an appreciation of the qualities of paint as a means of expression. There is evident an intelligent acceptance of the value of design, from the point of view of both colour and arrangement. The urge for creative work is evident, too, showing a desire to penetrate beneath the surface rather than merely to imitate nature.
Two portraits in oil by Jean Farquhar show a real appreciation of the construction of form, a quality that is also seen in two exquisite pencil drawings. Jack Crippen is represented by a number of landscapes and an interesting figure composition. The figure composition shows an intelligent interpretation of colour and pattern, as also do two figure compositions by Vida Steineit. Still life studies by Joan Lillicrap and F. Hunt are excellent in colour and design.
One little gem in the collection is a water colour, "Oey's Avenue," by A. Fumiell. This is »orthy of a place on the walls of any gallery. Good pencil and wash drawings, etchings and lithographs are numerous.
