THE BUDGET.
The Budget is the biggest disappointment of the Labour party's term of office. As an old Labourite of 3."> years' standing T really believe the discredited and defeated National party would have reduced some of tlie worst of the emergency taxes if it had been returned. We have gone out of the frying pan into the fire. Take the 5/ a quarter poll tax. The father of a family with only casual work can ill afford it, and it is mean to ask him to dub up his hard-earned shillings, which are so much needed where there are children to feed and clothe, to say nothing of dental and medical bills. The policy of forcing up wages, "bull at the gate fashion," lias been tried over and over again, with the same result—increased cost of living. Again, the Labour party's complete right about turn on the B stations and the drastic muzzling of a certain B station near Auckland, left a nasty taste in manv people's mouths. The real cause of unemployment has never been touched. The Government ha* the erroneous idea that the money question the allimportant question. True, a State bank with the eole right of note i«ssue was a goinl move, but to prove that the land question is far more important than the money question, all you have to say to the monetary reformer is "Put you and me on an island; you can have all the money, but give me all the In ml. and I will bring you to my heels within 24 hour-." It is the plain duty of the so-called Lnbnur party to make rating on unimproved values universal. E: STEVENSON.
