COMMUNITY LIGHTING.
KARANGAHAPE ROAD SCHEME.
FURTHER EFFORT SUGGESTED.
A fresh lease of life has been given the proposal for a community lighting scheme on Karangahape Road, which had been dropped temporarily owing to lack of municipal assistance towards the initial cost. A scheme has now been worked out for the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Association by the Auckland Electric Power Board treaeurer.
Reporting to the board yesterday, the treasurer outlined a proposal whereby the board let a contract for the installation at an estimated capital cost of £1240, payment for which in a period of five years should be guaranteed by the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Association in annual payments of £2 2/ per light, which would include operating costs of about £1 8/4 per light per year. At the end of five years
the capital cost would be repaid, and the cost to shopkeepers would then be 28/4 per light per annum. As an alternative, be suggested that the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Association arrange to finance the capital cost of £1240 itself, whereupon its sole remaining responsibility "would be the maintenance and operating cost of approximately 28/4 per light annually.
Commenting on the report, the chairman, Mr. S. J. Harbutt, stated that in the first alternative the board was taking a slight risk of defaults in payment, even though the payment was guaranteed by the Karangahape Road Businessmen's Association.
In reply to Mr. Dempsey, he stated that actually the terms were no more advantageous than had been granted to other bodies, who had had the advantage of municipal assistance, which had been refused the Karangahape Road people.
The board approved the proposal, which will be discussed with the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Association this week.
