BOWLS UNDER WAY

NEW SEASON STARTS. OFFICIAL OPENINGS. CABINET MINISTER ON GREEN. In perfect spring weather eight of the clubs affiliated to the Auckland Centre celebrated official openings to the 193738 season. Several hundreds of players took part, the majority on their own greens, while others attended as representatives of other clubs. Despite the increasing popularity of winter play many were having their first game for months, and took a few heads to get into their old swing. At all greens there were gay scenes. The chief feature, however, was the fine social atmosphere and the extreme friendliness which are the special attributes of bowling clubs. Veterans, as they oiled their bowls for play, or waited their turn at the heads, or partook of afternoon tea, cheerily exchanged greetings and reminiscences with old acquaintances; Members of the centre executive split into appropriate units and assisted at the various functions. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, and the Hon. F. E. Lark, deputy-chairman, Mr. L. C. McClintock and Mr. W. H. Xagle, members of the board, extended their good wishes at the opening of the Transport Club, and assured members that the board would co-operate in furthering the social activities of the staff.
