GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP. GUY TWO BEHIND. SEVEN STROKES SEPARATE first thirteen. I (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") HAMILTON, Friday. Thp oprn trait cli am pi on* hip 0 f N ew Zealand was left in a very interesting position an a result of the eecond day's play and 13 of the competitors are within seven strokes. Though the winner may come from any of thein, or even tlioee a stroke or two worse, it is considered that the issue lies among nix. Two strokes clear of the field is Moss (1024, 1927 and 1033 title-holder), with a total of 146, and if he is to enhance his fine record in Dominion golf he will have to break 300. He lias not been required to do so in three previous victories. With conditions remaining aa they were to-day-bright sunshine and moderate crow wind it looks as if the winner will aggregate no more than 206.

Mobs' golf, smooth and groomed, has long been a model, but where he haa failed is in ability to push home the advantages of his accuracy through the fairways. He

is likely to fall into the three-putt complex. There was none of that to-day, and if his temperament is the same tomorrow he will hold his place.

Guy was not so convincing to-day, but with his great range from the tees he must always be in the firing line. Next to him, in third position, i« Hornabrook, and he is expected to maintain the strongest amateur challenge. Ewen and Sime, a stroke away, do not appea.' as much, nor doe# Moore, two strokes worse. On the same murk, 153, are Shaw and Douglas. With his third round performance at New Plymouth last year in mind, Shaw is still the danger to those above him. At New Plymouth after the second round he gave T. S. Galloway, the leader, four strokes' start and Guy one, but he had vanquished them in one round, a 70. He will require a round of similar brilliance to 4<ld an eighth Open victor* New Amateurs In Limelight. Play was of a better standard in the socond round, and three new amateurs stepped into the limelight of the six best rounds. R. F. Kitto tied with Hornabrook for the third best round of the day and, like his older brother, who had a 77 yesterday, has supreme confidence. W. G. Horne (Hutt), 74, had visions of an even better round with three holes to go. Then he required three fours for a 70, but 5, 0, 5 was the best he could do against the bogey 5, 4, 5. They are good finishing holes. There was much merit, too, in the 74 of Jas. Logan, a new member of Shandon, who this year arrived from Scotland. There were three penalties in that round.

Among the 153 batch is the Titirangi youth, J. Galloway. He is a cousin of T. S. Galloway, 18 years old, and is a finalist in his club championship. A year ago he showed possibilities in the Auckland provincial title and he has undoubtedly got the family flo-»r for thi game. Form of Hattersley.

The Sydney visitor, H. W. Hatteraley, ] has not given of hi# best yet an.l is troubled still in holding the green*. He find* that there is not the same bite in them as in the bent <grae« of Australia, and he hag. not mastered the alternative pitch and run shot to the green. There were anxious moments for many in the gradual elimination of those who were not eligible for the final two rounds to-morrow. Eventually the 72 with aggregates up to 165 remained. Last on the list wan P. O. F. Smith (Akarana), and he had an experience which should be a lesson to him. He was at sea on the greens to-day and finished hi« round with a seven, after being just off the edge of the eighteenth green in two. From five feet lie took four putta. After missing one of about a foot he carelessly attempted to drop one of a few inches with the back of his putter. Perhaps it would have been too cruel a lesson had he been left out in the cold to-morrow, for he is one ot tne best youthful playeTS in the Dominion. Seventy Left In.
