DESTROYED BY FIRE.
MAORI MEETING-HOUSE. (From Our Correspondent.) TE PUKE, Friday. One of the oldest Maori meeting- | houses in the district was destroyed by fire at Maketu this week. A bucket brigade attempted to fight the flames, but owing to the lack of water nothing could be done to save the building. Situated on a hill overlooking Maketu, the burning house could be seen from a great distance, and attracted the natives from far and near. The meeting-house was the property of the Motiti and Pukehina Maoris, and was called Ngati Hemo Whakangaio. I
