OBITUARY.
MR. GEORGE DAVIS.
UNION SECRETARY.
~A unionist in Auckland, Mr. George Davis, died early this morning. Mr. Davis was 62 years of age, and was the oldest union secretary in Auckland. He formed the Carters' Union in 1899, and was for 38 years in continuous service up till six months ago, -when he retired on account of illhealth. Mr. Davis was made a Justice ?r J , £ eace in 1909> On th e death of Mr. X. G. Baume, who represented Auckland East in Parliament, Mr. Davis contested the seat against Mr. Arthur Myers, who won the election. Again when Roskill was constituted an electorate in 1919, Mr. Davis was in the field against Mr. Vivian Potter, but was again defeated. Mr. Davis was for two terms a member of the Auckland Council. He was secretary and chairman of the Labour Day celebration committee since its inception some 33 years ago. He leaves a wife and grown up family.
