FRANKLIN POWER BOARD,

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Northcote Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Air. R. Martin, presiding. Shore Nurse.—The Mayor stated that Nurse McDonald, the hospital nurse on the North Shore, was provided with a motor car, and had authority to call a doctor if necessary, for which the Auckland Hospital Board would pay. Her telephone number at Takapuna was 23-587. Ferry Service—lt was decided to suggest next Tuesday for the conference with the Birkenhead Borough Council regarding the ferry time-table. Bathing Facilities.—The lack of public conveniences for bathers at Hall's Beach was referred to in a letter from a ratepayer. Mr. N. S. Davidson referred to previous efforts, when financial considerations intervened. The proposal might be worth looking into again. The Mayor said the estimated cost was £150 for a building in the roadway. The question now arose what was going to happen if a wharf was constructed in Little Shoal Bay.

MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD.

IThe Mount Roskill Road Board met last night, Mr. C. M. McCullough presiding. I Adjustment Commission.—The board ■ declined a request to be represented at a sitting of the Auckland City Adjustment Commission, the representative to have authority to compound on rate arrears liability. The board favoured a continuance of the present procedure. The clerk of the board has power, however, to attend to special cases at his discretion. Rate Arrears.—lt was decided that all rate arrears outstanding on March 31 in each year be handed to the solicitors as soon as practicable after that date, and that action be taken promptly to recover the same. Postal Boundaries.—The Chief Postmaster, Mr. VV. G. Cooper, advised the board-that the matter of the delivery of mail matter in Ridge Road, Hasley Drive and White Swan Road by a postman from Dominion Road, instead of from Avondale, cannot be done. On the motion of the chairman a committee was appointed to interview the Postmaster-General when he next visits Auckland. Lighting Charges.—The Auckland Electric Power Board advised a reduction in the street lighting charges, showing a saving to Mount Roskill for 1937-38 of £110 18/7. Dominion Road Intersection.—A committee was set up to consider a suggestion from a ratepayer that, in order to avoid collisions, an improvement should be made to the southern side of Mount Albert Road between Mount Roskill Road j and Dominion Road. | Poundkeeper's Authority. —On the motion of Mr. J. Donald, the board rescinded a resolution requiring the poundkeeper to consult the board before taking legal proceedings against persons permitting cattle to stray on the district roads. Finance.-—The clerk reported a credit balance in the p°neral account of £4183, and £5000 at call.

PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD.

The Papatoetoe Town Board met last evening, the chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, presiding. Concreting Footpaths—lt was reported that good progress had been made on the concreting of footpaths under Scheme 13, and the work of paving the path from the school corner southwards to the Manulcau County boundary had been completed. ! Activities were in hand on the footpath on the southern side of St. George Street in the centre of the town area. Numerous other streets were included in the programme to be carried out under the scVeme

during the next few months, and a total. length of about two miles of footpaths l should be surfaced in concrete before the I end of the year.

More Street Lights.—As a result of the reduction in the street lighting charges by the Auckland Electric Power Board it was estimated that there would be a saving to to the town district of £42 10/ annually, this saving the board decided to pass on to the public in the form of additional street lights, in accordance with the policy followed in the past.

New Road Works.—lt was stated that the progress made on the two contracts, in Wyllie Road and Carruth Road, had been rapid as a result of tiie fine weather in the middle of August and that the Wyllie Road work should be completed in about 10 days it conditions were favourable. The Carruth Road contract should be finished in September.

Men on Scheme 13.—Advice was received from the Auckland Placement Office that men employed on works under Scheme 13 were required to enrol as members of the General Labourers' Union, it being stated that the enrolment fee was 5/ and the weekly contributions were 6d. The chairman commented that as the employment would be only temporary, being limited to four months, and the aim was to relieve the burden on the relief funds of the State, it was difficult to understand the attitude of the authorities in insisting that the men should be put to the expense of enrolling as unionists and maintaining their subscriptions for a comparatively short time. He said that £4 out or the £4 10/ payable weekly to the men was from the Unemployment Fund. It was decided, however, that the board place the information before the men.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. The Franklin Electric Power Board met to-day, Mr. John Dean presiding. Line Construction.—She engineer, Mr. i L. G. Sharp, reported that the 11,000-volt extension at Onewhero had been completed and livened on August 16. This work consisted of a mile and a quarter of high tension and 90 chains of low tension wiring, together with a transformer sub-station. The strengthening of the Helvetia road line and alterations at Pukekohe West had been completed and this enabled the Patumahoe-Waiau PaMental Hospital districts to be supplied on a separate line. Installations—During the month 79 applications were received for new installations, while 16] permits were issued for new work and additions to existing installations. The principal additions to the load included 159 horse power for industrial motors, 41 new milking and separator -motors, 37 water-heaters, 18 ranges and nine pump motors. PurchiiNO of Power.—For the five weeks ending August 15, the board purchased from the Public Works Department a total of 1.983,0(j0 unite of power. The rapid increase in the number of units purchased per week could be realised when the week ending August 15 was compared with the corresponding week last vear. Tine year the total was 403,938 units, while last year it was 331,092, representing an increase of 72,846 units, or 22 per cent.
