VIVIAN BRILLIANT.

HIS FIRST CENTURY. Hampshire Leads N-Z. by 97 on First Innings. WEIR AMD CARSON EXCEED 50. United Prees Association.—Oopyrifht (Received 10.30 a.m.) LOXDOX, August 23. With one more day to play, the position in the cricket match, at Bournemouth, is that Hampshire after leading New Zealand by 97 runs on the first innings, had 49 on the board in the second for the loss of one wicket. On Saturday the county ran up 393 for eight wickets, the innings dosing this morning for 421. The Dominion's reply was 324, and the net position at stumps showed Hants 146 runs ahead with nine wickets standing. Vivian, now batting better than at any part of the tour, brilliantly compiled his first century of the tour and reached 1000 runs in first-class matches. He drove exceptionally hard, cut and pulled strongly. He hit two sixes (straight on-drives) and 11 fours. His century occupied 150 minutes against steady bowling, supported by smart fielding. Herman and Heath, fastish bowlers, got plenty of life out of the pitch, while Creese (who came from South Africa to qualify for Hants), was accurate with left-arm slows. Weir and Carson, in a fine partnership, added 112. Carson played very soundlv, and scored five boundaries, "all strong leg-hits. Weir was workmanlike, driving cleanly and placing well to leg. The light faded quickly after tea and Xew Zealand lost the last five wickets quickly to the steady bowling of Creese. Hants batted for half an hour. The Xew Zealanders proved a popular attraction at Bournemouth on Saturday. Over 4000 paid £224, a record for the ground for this season. This was eclipsed to-day, 5500 paying over £280.
