NEW TAXI-CAB SERVICE. OWNER-DRIVERS JOIN UP. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. An amalgamated taxi service, operated by owner-drivere on the Auckland system, is to commence in Palmerston North next month. Since evidence was given here six months ago before the commission which investigated taxi services throughout the Dominion negotiations have been in progress with the aim of co-ordinating the present taxi operators in a unified system, and it is claimed the new company already represents 80 per cent of Palmerston North's taxi drivers. All others win be given an opportunity of joining if they wish. It is claimed that this step will be an effective reply to the commission's dictum, "put your house in order or we will have to do it for you." A central office will operate a telephone eyetem to taxis on private stands in various parts of the city, for which application will be made at to-night's council meeting. The owner-drkers will retain their own takings but will contribute to administration expenses.
