The Auckland Boxing Association's provincial amateur championships were commenced at the Town Hall last evening, when there wae a good attendance to witness the firet night's programme. In general the boxing standard wae up to expectations, and if science wae lacking on some occasions there wae often compensation in the vigorous way the contestant* shaped up to one another. Elimination wad the keynote of the evening, and those who came out on the winning side will have the opportunity of going further. There wae occasionally dissent expressed by a section of the spectators when decisions were given, but in the average event the result was clear cut and beyond question. The big programme wae splendidlyhandled by the officials. There were no waite or delays throughout tfae evening, and there was always another pair ready to take the ring as soon as a decision had been given. Good Field. McLachlan and W. McDonald, the former getting a point* decision. In the welter-weight class F. Woods, with hard hitting, had all the beat of matters with V. Caltaux, the latter being in a bad way at the final gong. The holder of the title, W. Pordie/bad to go hard all the way to win from D.

Johnston. It was one of the beet bouts of the night, and the holder was fully extended. In the same division E. Eetall pot the decision from R.
