GALLIO'S EFFORT.

BEATEN BY A HEAD. A FINE PERFORMANCE. first race since spring. ! Having his first race since last spring, Gallio clearly demonstrated that he has lost none of his pace by his attractive performance in the Dunedin Handicap at t.llershe on Saturday. His appearance indicated that he had done a good deal of work, and the race is sure to bring him on a lot. Ae a three-year-old last season Gallio won both the Great Northern and Avondale Guineas, the Trentham Stakes and Harcourt Stakes at Wellington, and his form was of such an outstanding nature that a big future was confidently - predicted for him. However, wfren taken to Riccarton to contest the New Zealand Derby, he went amiss, and it was assumed that his racing career was ended. On Saturday he pulled up .well, and there is every indication that he will "be a good winner this season if he can only be kept sound. HER TURN WILL COME. Eozel went a good race in the Greenmount Steeples, in which she defeated the rest of the field just as comfortably as she was herself beaten by Lochiel Lad. She was in better condition than when here in June, and as she is a proficient jumper her prospects of winning a hunters' event later in the season appear bright. DISPLAYED BRILLIANT SPEED. When Huntinginore paraded for the Dunedm Handicap at Ellerslie he looked in nice order, but appeared to be a little fretful, and the race should work a big improvement in him. He displayed all his former brilliancy when the barrier lifted, and when he becomes a bit more seasoned he will be a force to be reckoned with over sprint distances. DID NOT IMPRESS. On the strength of his Useful form in the south Platter was installed a good third favourite in the Greenmount Steeples, but failed to get into the money. He was not too well placed over the first half of the journey, but jumped safely, and finally occupied fifth position. The effort was disappointing. and, being an aged mare, the future of Platter does not appeal to anv extent. SHOWED IMPROVED STAMINA. In finishing second to Captain Bruce in the Sylvia Park Handicap Palustre was responsible for an encouraging performaJ?c,e' . She began smartly and was responsible for the fast pace set throughout the race, and held her position to within*a short distance from the post. A pleasing feature of her* effort was the improved manner in "which she held on. It was her first race since the autumn, and she promises to be an early winner. SOUTHERN TRIP LIKELY. F?rsen had his first outing of the season when he contested the open sprint at rEUerslie on Saturday. He did not run prominently, but considering the fast pace at jiyhich the race was run this was only to be expected, but the outing has sharpened him up a good deal. If present intentions are adhered to Fersen will be taken to the combined Hunt meeting-at New Plymouth and later will compete at the Wanganui fixture.
