THEIR FIRST SUCCESS.
Newton scored their first victory of tho season when they beat North Shore by 24 to 15 .in the early mutch on No. 2 ground. From the outset Newton went to the attack, and, playing -with their usual abandon, gave North Shore a torrid time of it for the first spell, with the result that they had eight points to th*ir credit when half-time was called. Newton continued to play at their best in the second half, and rattled on a further Iβ points before, the game ended. The victory was well deserved, and the superior combination of their inside backs told its tale. The forwards packed well and hold the opposing vanguard. The fanlt of tlie North Shore side appeared to bo a lack of penetration by the insides, and nearly every time a chance came their way the ball travelled straight across field. The blacks made a valiant effort t° pnll the game out of the fire when they scored 15 points in quick succession, but the superior Newton combination saw the red and whites well on top. For the winners Dempsey gave a fine display of handling and line-kicking , and was at his best. Both Crook and Gibson used their pace to advantage, and when in possession were hard to stop. E. Brimble added finish to the attacking movements, and showed his dash of two seasons ago. W. Brimble proved an enterprising half, but was inclined to hold on too long, with the result that the defence had every chance to cover. All the forwards worked well, with Clem, Proctor and McNeight, the ex-West Coast player, perhTerrbedefended stoutly for Shore. . and saved his side on innumerable occasions. L. Scott displayed his best speed on He wing, and was always dangerous when in possession. Sterling was the better of the inside men, while in a useful pack Sowter Hunt and Hollows were always on the ball.
