HEMI'S DAY.

WAITANGI SHIELD.

WIN FOR TAMAKI.

MAHOHf OF 22 PODfTS.

Real wet weather football wae provided at Carlaw Park yesterday when the Tamaki (Auckland) Maoris played Waikato Maoris for possession of the Waitangi Shield, and won by 28 to 6. The conditions were not conducive to combined play, but all the same both sides attempted to open the game up at every opportunity, and several good movements were witnessed at various stages of the match. The superior backs of the Tamaki team proved a shade too much for Waikato, and whenever the local team were in possession danger threatened the provincial side. The match wae well contested, and the Waikato forwards played splendidly, and it wae due to their fine work in the loose that Tamaki did not further increase their total.

The two features of the game were the splendid displays of Hemi, at full-back for Tamaki, and Parihika, behind the pack for Waikato. The former's display of handling the greasy ball was brilliant, and he saved his side from several difficult situations with his kngthy kicking. Parihika worked like a Trojan and it was no fault of his that Tamaki penetrated the defence on so many occasions. He defended desperately, and never missed hie man, and a little more support from the other backs may have made a difference in the margin of points against Waikato.

Incidentally it could be termed Hemi'e day m besides- hie brilliant display he scored three triee and kicked five goals, a total of nineteen points out of twentyeight. Kata was a source of danger to the opposing side, and his fine, straight running gained much valuable ground, while Bickerton aleo played well.

For the loeers Mackie handled with accuracy, but was inclined' to try to do too much, and this frequently nullified some good work on hie part. Taoho put in eoine daehing work on the left flank, and when he retired injured he was badly mieeed. Of a hard-working pack the best were Mi n nix and Paul.

Tries for Tamaki were scored by Hemi (3), Broughton (2) and Rata, while Hemi kicked five goals. For Waikato Taoho and Hilton added tries.
