Germany Leads Czechoslovakia In European Final. CRAMM AND HENKEL BOTH WIN (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 9. In the European zone final of the Davis Cup, at Berlin, Germany won the first two singles against Czechoslovakia. Scores:— O. von Cramm beat K. Menzel, 3 —6, 4—6, 6—4, 6—3, o—2. H. Henkel beat L. Hecht, 6—l, 7—5, 7—5. At Paris, the Australian tennis team began a match against France. J. Bromwich defeated Y. Petra, 6—2, 3—6, 6—3; A. Merlin conquered C. E. Sproule, 6 —4, 6 —3; C. Boussus was too good for J. H. Crawford, 6—2, 4 —6, 7—5; and Bernard and Petra beat Bromwich and Sproule in the doubles, 4—6, 3—6, 6—4, 6—3, 7—5.
In the semi-final of the Midland Counties championship, H. F. David (ranked sixth in Britain in 1933) beat A. C. Stedman (New Zealand), 6— i, 6—B, 6—4.
0. P. Hughes has withdrawn from the British Davis Cup team, which will defend the trophy at Wimbledon on July 24, 26 and 27. This has been caused owing to a breakdown, due to strain and over-exertion. F. H. D. Wilde replaces him.
The other members of the British Davis Cup team are H. W. Austin, C. E. Hare and C. R. D. Tuckey. As Germany is practicaHy certain to beat the Czechs, Cramm and Henkel will play Budge, Grant and Mako (U.S.A.) at Wimbledon on July 17, 19 and 20, to decide which country will meet Britain.
