BREACHES OF AWARDS.
DAIRYMAN FINED. MAGISTRATE'S COMMENTS. Charles E. Mills (Mr. Goklstine), a Papatoetoe milk vendor, admitted four charges of breaches, of industrial awards in respect to payment of employees, in the Police Court at Otahuhu yesterday. Mr. H. S. Hurle, inspector of awards, said that in the first charge, a learner who had been employed for four days had not been paid the award rates. The second charge concerned an employee who had 'been engaged for two weeks and who was offered £2 2/ for his β-vcond week, as against the award wage of £4 0/. The other two charges concerned an employee who was not paid for his last three daj's or for overtime duo. Mr. Goldstine said the breaches had been the result of a misunderstanding by the defendant, who had since psiid the amounts. In every case the employees had left the defendant without giving any notice, and Mr. Mills, thinking that one week's noties on either side was necessary, had considered the employees had forfeited the wages owing. Mr. Golde-tine stated that under the provisions of the present award Mr. Mills had been forced to pay the employee concerned in the third and fourth charges the sum of £5 14/8 for four days' work, although he had given the man four days oft to make up for his working 14 days on end. He asked the magistrate to impose a light penalty. Mr. Hurle agreed to this course. "The award shows that the old .relationship between master and employee has materially altered," said Mr. McKean, S.M. "The defendant has certainly been unfortunate, and the case shows how necessary it is for employers to make themselves acquainted with the provisions of awards." Plaintiff received judgment for 1/ on each charge and 6/ costs on the first charge only.
