WAIKATO SYNOD.
OPENED AT NEW PLYMOUTH. CHURCH FINANCE SUGGESTION. (By Telegraph.—Specir.l to "Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A plea for the conduct of Church finance in an efficient and businesslike way was made by the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, Bishop of Waikato, in his charge to the annual Waikata Diocesan Synod which opened here to-day. The bishop suggested that an effort should be made to discover the number of church families in each parish, each member of the vestry to make himself responsible for obtaining finance for a certain number of families. Parishioners should then be a«»ked to provide a certain sum to balance the budget. He considered if church finance were placed on that basis the results would be amazing. At the opening of his address the bishop paid a warm tribute to the work of Archdeacon G. rf. Gavin, of New Plymouth, the Vicar-General of the diocese, "for his kindly, painstaking and successful administration of the dioceee" during the bishop's absence in England. Commenting on the Maori Mission work of the diocese, Bishop Cherrington expressed appreciation to parishioners for their efforts in the past year. The diocese, he said, was again asking for £400 for home missions and £600 for Maori missions. He intended consulting the clergy with a view to making the missions a more real part of the diocese's work than before. The diocesan quota wa& not reached this year, and that accounted for the deficit in the accounts. The bishop said the diocese could not do with less than £600, in spite of the fact that the Maoris themselves had made the magnificent contribution of £115 for the year.
