NEW ZEALAND LEAD AGAINST GLOUCESTER.

HAMMOND A CENTURY

Dunning Bowls Record Number of Overs.

PRAISE FOB N.Z. FIELDING. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 5. The cricket match between Gloucestershire and New Zealand was continued at Bristol, and at the end of the second day's play New Zealand had a lead on the first innings of 27 runs. Wonderful bowling by Dunning and consistent accuracy by Vivian greatly helped the tourists to secure a first innings lead despite a fine first wicket stand by Barnett and Allen, the vigour of the left-hander Crapp, and an unhurried century, his eighth of the seaeon, by Hammond. Dunning's stamina was remarkable. Hβ bowled nearly an hour and a half before lunch, and altogether delivered a record number of overs in one innings on the tour. He spun the ball back sometimes and had four short-legs, where two fine catches were taken by Page. Vivian might easily have taken more wickets. The wicket was never difficult. Rain, after tea, greased the ball and almost spoiled the tourists' chances, especially when there was a brisk half-century by the youngster, Emmett, formerly of Devon. I

Roberts nobly rose to the occasion with a fine spell of steady bowling, his figures for the last hour being three wickets for 15 runs. The New Zealanders' ground fielding again was often brilliant. There was another large crowd, the takings being £200, compared with £330 on Saturday. The Lord Mayor lunched with the players and extended an official welcome. New Zealand appealed against the light after one over. The wicket appears likely to crumble. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND. First innings 362 Second Innings.
