BRITISH ARMAMENT
Considered Guarantee of World Peace. SMALL NATIONS THANKFUL. British Official Wireless. (Received 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, July 5. Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister, speaking at Birmingham, said: "Everyone knows Britain's rearmament will never be used for purposes of aggression, and everyone knows that even in peace time it will ever be ready to perform those humanitarian functions which seem always to fall upon this country. "In these last few weeks nearly 40,000 Spanish refugees have been escorted to places of safety under protection of the British flag. Before that lamentable affair comes to an end there will be thousands of Spanish women and children who will have cause to thank God for the presence of British ships in Spanish waters. "I have been told by important repretatives of foreign countries in the last few weeks that British rearmament is welcomed by every small nation because they realise, as do our Dominions, that a strong Britain is the surest guarantee of peace that can exist."
